  6. This PostScript font is used to create barcodes in CODE 39
  7. (also called 3-of-9 code).  It has been tested successfully with
  8. several combinations of barcodes and Postscript output devices.

  17. Changes in this first update
  18. ----------------------------
  19. The enhancements in this update are minor.
  20.  
  21. 1.  The start/stop character recommended by INTERMEC (creators of
  22.     CODE 39) is the asterisk *.  The manual from which we originally
  23.     encoded the font recommended the at sign @ for that purpose.
  24.     This version of the font has the same start/stop barcode encoded
  25.     for both * and @ characters.
  26.  
  27. 2.  Despite the appearance in both Fontographer and ResEdit that the
  28.     <Space> character is properly encoded with its barcode, it doesn't
  29.     seem to work properly in any Macintosh applications.  The <Space>
  30.     is copied onto the comma character to help you access it.  There
  31.     are no problems accessing it from other computers, with standard
  32.     PostScript code.
  33.  
  34. 3.  This font was generated by Altsys' Fontographer Version 2.4.1.
  35.     The PostScript is a bit different from earlier version.s
  36.  
  37. 4.  Rewritten (and longer) documentation.

  43. Distribution
  44. ------------
  45. There should be five files included in the distribution (probably
  46. in StuffIt format):
  47.  
  48. 1.  Code39Barcode   Type=acf2    Creator=aca2  (Fontographer)
  49.  
  50.     This is the Fontographer source file.  Users of Fontographer
  51.     can make custom changes or generate new bitmap sizes with this
  52.     file.  It isn't of much use to anyone else.
  53.  
  54. 2.  Code3Bar   Type=LWFN    Creator=LWRT  (Macintosh Downloadable font)
  55.  
  56.     This is the actual PostScript downloadable font, stored with
  57.     the resource fork used by the Macintosh laser-printer drivers.
  58.     Put this in your System Folder, along with installing the bitmaps,
  59.     (see #3 below) for Macintosh printing to work properly.
  60.  
  61.     If you want to use the font on another computer (e.g. UNIX or
  62.     MS-DOS) you can convert it to a plain text file and it is a
  63.     downloadable font conforming to Adobe "Green Book" specifications.
  64.     On a Macintosh, most text editors can open a non-TEXT file when
  65.     you hold down the OPTION key while choosing File:Open.  In Paragon's
  66.     QUED/M, this is an option in the Open window.  If you are accessing
  67.     the files from MS-DOS or UNIX using the UNSIT programs available
  68.     for each, just extract the data fork of the file with line-ending
  69.     conversion turned on.

  71.     If you use Adobe Illustrator (or Aldus Freehand, which can read
  72.     Illustrator files) you may find Taylored Graphics' FontLiner
  73.     program useful.  It will convert a LWFN file created by
  74.     Fontographer into an Illustrator picture containing all the
  75.     letters of the font, which is fully editable as if you had
  76.     traced over all the letters yourself.

  78. 3.  Code3Barcode.bmap    Type=FFIL   Creator=DMOV (Font/DA Mover)
  79.  
  80.     This contains 12- and 24- point bitmap representations of the
  81.     font, in Macintosh format.  Move them into your System file
  82.     with Font/DA Mover and, in combination with Code3Bar, things
  83.     should work just like printing any other laser font.

  85. 4.  Code3Barcode.AFM    Type=TEXT    Creator=????
  86.  
  87.     I don't think any program uses this Adobe Font Metrics file for
  88.     information about exact character widths.  Included only because
  89.     it's automatically generated.

  96. Legal Stuff
  97. -----------
  98. This font is free.  The current term describing its distribution
  99. seems to be "FreeWare."  Previously we called it "militantly
  100. public domain."  These terms should mean that it is copyrighted,
  101. but freely available.
  102.  
  103. You may distribute all the files together (preferably in a StuffIt
  104. archive) as long as you make no profit on the transaction.
  105. CompuServe, GEnie, and other online services are excepted from this.
  106. Those firms that sell disks of public domain programs are excepted
  107. from this, unless they charge over $8 per disk.
  108.  
  109. You should definately not distribute modified versions of the files;
  110. if you need changes, keep them to yourself or ask me to include them
  111. in a general release.  We have plenty of mail addresses.
